Champions League Final Preview - Manchester United Vs Barcelona

On the 27 May, Manchester United will battle with Barcelona in the final of this season UEFA Champions League at Rome's Stadio Olimpico. Both teams have the credential and fire power to become this season European Champion. Manchester United can become the first team in 19 years to retain the trophy they won last year. Ac Milan was the last team to win back-to-back European Champion Club's Cup (the name for the previous version of UEFA Champions League) in 1989 and 1990.

Both teams will be missing key players in the final through suspension and injury. Barcelona will be without Eric Abidal and Daniel Alves. Abidal was red carded in the second-leg semifinal against Chelsea, while Alves received his third yellow cards of the tournament in London. Darren Fletcher of Manchester United will miss the final after collecting a red card for a foul on Cesc Fabregas in the second-leg semifinal against Arsenal. Barcelona Rafael Marques is definitely rule out of the final due to injury on his left knee. However, Andreas Iniesta and Theiry Henry look set to miss out as well. Iniesta picked up a thigh injury in his side's 3-3 draw at home to Villarreal. Henry is fighting to be fit after picking up a ligament injury in the game against Real Madrid.

Pep Guardiola, Barcelona's manager, faces some difficult selection choice in defence due to injury and suspension. Alex Ferguson has fewer headaches among the two managers as he has almost a full squad at his disposal. Daren Fletcher being the only set back but he has enough quality in his squad to replace Fletcher.

This game will also feature a battle between two of the best footballer in the world at the moment, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Messi has been the key factor for the rise of Barcelona this season. Ronaldo maintained his momentum from last season to help Manchester United in winning several trophies this season. But for this season, the ultimate prize which both really wants is the UEFA Champions League.

Manchester United's UEFA Champions League Triumphs

Manchester United FC, also known as Man United or MUFC, is considered the biggest soccer club in England and one of the biggest soccer clubs in Europe. Nicknamed the Red Devils, MUFC has won the UEFA Champions League three times throughout its illustrious history. Here are brief histories of Man United's UEFA Champions League (UCL) triumphs:

1. Season 1967-68. Manchester United won its first UCL trophy in the 1968 season. The final was played at Wembley stadium in London, where Man United beat Benfica of Portugal 4-1. The manager of this MUFC team was Sir Matt Busby, and the team was led by midfielder Bobby Charlton and winger George Best.

2. Season 1998-99. Manchester United's second UCL trophy came in 1999, 31 years after the triumph in London. Man United defeated Bayern Munich of Germany in the final that was played at Camp Nou in Barcelona, Spain. The match is best remembered for the two goals that the Red Devils scored in the injury time to beat Bayern Munich 2-1. The manager of this 1999 MUFC team was the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson, and the team was led by skipper Roy Keane and star midfielders David Beckham and Ryan Giggs.

3. Season 2007-08. Manchester United won its third UCL trophy in 2008. The final was contested between Man United and Chelsea FC of England, making it the first final in history that featured two English teams. The final was held at Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, marking the first time that a Champions League final was played in Russia. The match itself was decided by a penalty shootout, which the Red Devils won 6-5. The manager of this 2008 MUFC team was once again Sir Alex Ferguson.

Watch Schalke vs Chelsea Live Online - UEFA Champions League Preview

Schalke might be trailing the other three teams in Group B, but they still have everything to play for as they welcome Chelsea to the Arena AufSchalke with a single point separating them from second position. For Chelsea, a victory would guaranteed a place in the knockout rounds if the result in the night's other group fixture goes their way.

With Chelsea rediscovering their winning form under new coach Avram Grant, the challenge for Schalke two weeks ago was already fraught with difficulties. Another blow came when Kevin Kuranyi was ruled out just before the start with a knee injury, and with only four minutes to go, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer committed a grave mistake that allowed Florent Malouda to score the opener.

Schalke second defeat in three games was confirmed when Didier Drogba blast a diving header into the net, though there were positives and Soren Larsen was unfortunate with a header that came back off an upright. Now Schalke must rediscover the form that enabled them to win away to Rosenborg BK on Matchday 2 as they look to improve on their previous two UEFA Champions League group campaigns in which they finished in fourth and third place.

There was a gap of 32 years before Schalke crossed swords with the English foes. It came in the first group stage of the 2001/02 UEFA Champions League when they beat Arsenal 3-1 at the Arena AufSchalke. It was the final group fixture and it could not prevent Schalke finishing in fourth place while the Gunners went into the contest knowing they had already qualified.
Chelsea approach this coming match knowing that a third successive group win would assure them of a place for the fifth successive season if Rosenborg secured a second victory away at Valencia.

Stuttgart were Chelsea's opponents in the 1997/98 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup final when Gianfranco Zola's goal in Stockholm was enough to give Chelsea the trophy for a second time.

UEFA Champions League - Round of Sixteen Preview

The Champions League is back after a two month absence. It is only the round of sixteen, yet some of the match ups which will be on show are absolutely mouthwatering. Giants of the game will clash and some big names will be eliminated. The competition will be intense and nothing can be taken for granted. Here are some of the key matches I'm looking forward to and what I think might happen:

Inter Milan V Manchester United - San Siro, Milan

Two giants of European football, two teams in wonderful form at the moment. In a match worthy of the final it is very unfortunate that these teams had to meet now and it will be sad to see one of them go.
Both teams have incredible managers and have dominated their domestic leagues to the extent that they've all but won them with three months still to go. They have class all over the park, in particular, both teams have formidable attacking weapons with Ronaldo, Rooney, Adriano and Ibrahimovic just to name a few.

All things being the same it is difficult to separate these teams, but unfortunately things aren't quite equal if you compare the defences. Vidic is suspended for the match because of his red card in the Club World Cup final. Evans got injured recently and Gary Neville is still out. John O'Shea is in doubt as well. To go to the San Siro is difficult at the best of times, but with Rio Ferdinand having to play with a makeshift centre back in central defence, one can only think Inter has the edge. I am going to be bold and say that "The Special One" and Inter will win by a narrow margin in the first leg. Man Utd will be much stronger in the second leg.

Arsenal V Roma - Emirates, London

Who would want to be an Arsenal fan this season? Who would want to be a Roma fan for that matter? Both teams have had bad seasons by their standards but both are starting to find some sort of form, although not nearly to either team's potential.

This is a key clash for both teams to savour something from their disappointing seasons. Both teams, being so inconsistent, it is difficult to predict who will come out on top. Arsenal have been playing better recently, but they haven't been able to find the killer blow, so this may well be their day. With Roma looking to defend away from home, this game could be a draw or if Arsenal can finally finish their chances, they could come away with a desperately needed win. Arsenal will need it because it will be very difficult for them to win in Rome in the second leg.

Real Madrid V Liverpool - Bernabeu, Madrid

When the draw was first announced, I was certain Liverpool would win, but the draw was announced weeks ago. There have been many changes since, and Real Madrid seem to be going from strength to strength whereas Liverpool haven't been doing as well as their fans would like.

Since Juande Ramos has taken over and bought Lasanna Diarra, Real Madrid's defensive record has been exceptional. It is little wonder that they've had such an impressive winning streak since the pair (Ramos and Diarra) have arrived. Diarra could finally be the long term replacement for Makelele that Real have craved for so many years. In contrast, Liverpool, have gone from comfortably leading the English Premier League to being seven points behind bitter rivals Manchester United. They will again be without inspirational captain Steven Gerrard, so taking everything into consideration I think Liverpool will struggle away from home. Real Madrid should win this one. Liverpool will be better in the second leg.

UEFA Champions League

Having won last season's edition, Manchester United FC lead the entries for the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League, which will conclude on Wednesday 27 May 2009 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome; the question that rises is "can they repeat?"

Last season Manchester United could say they questionable had their best season for an extensive, lengthy time. Cristiano Ronaldo (Premier League top scorer and World player of the year) and Wayne Rooney helped win two big titles, the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League. Both made millions of Euros.

The question this year will be in what order the 'big four' will be positioned. Can any team break into the elite group of clubs that are dominating English football? I will say it is possible!! Looking further down the league; can the newly promoted teams survive in the Premier League? Why not! They are prepared already.

Look at the 'big four'. Manchester United has not brought any new bodies in (not that they need) but have lost someone significant, Tony Coton. Why will Coton be missed? Simple, best goalkeeping coach Manchester United has ever had and despite the fact the knee injury retired him for good, he will be someone to look for advice in a future.

Man Utd has survived the 'Ronaldo saga' and live to fight another day. All in all it has been a quiet summer for Manchester United. Alex Ferguson has said over the last few days that he hopes to sign an elite player soon (the name Robinho keeps popping in my head).

I don't like to predict, but would expect Man Utd to be in the top two or I can foresee the future and say injuries could play a roll. Why? Well, besides the fact that this championship is being played in a "battle field" any injuries to key men like Ronaldo, Rooney or Tevez may mean they could struggle to score goals, has happened before; this was a problem that did occur at times last season, but like earlier mentioned, Ferguson is tracking a striker and this could put an end to any apparent flaw in the squad.

Now, how much is Chelsea willing to risk winning this year? Well, Scolari, Deco, Porto... need I say more? Of course I do, what about the dramatic change in tactics. Chelsea is going all the way, so don't be surprised to see them playing another UEFA final game against Manchester United once again. Maybe you are wondering "will Chelsea focus more on the Champions League instead of the Premier League?" That sort of rational could ambition the title near Manchester.

Manchester United is with no doubt on top of the pile, not only locally, but on the European front. The current crop of players is certainly the finest manager Sir. Alex Ferguson has had at his retention in his twenty-two year influence, but who of the pretenders can make a strong claim as being genuine contenders this season? Will the 'Big Four' charge further away, or can others shorten the gap?

Watch AS Roma vs Real Madrid Live Online - UEFA Champions League Preview 2008

Italian Serie A club AS Roma have been quite formidable in the UEFA Champions League, scoring 3 wins, 2 draws and only a loss during the group stages. In their campaign for the Italian Serie A title, AS Roma are 2nd place so far in the standings, behind Serie A leaders Inter Milan by 8 points. AS Roma, coached by Luciano Spalletti, will be relying on key players like David Pizarro, Philippe Mexes, Simone Perrotta, Ludovic Giuly and Francesco Totti to deliver a victory over Real Madrid.

I would expect Schuster to opt for Baptista instead of Guti in the centre of midfield, sacrificing the sulky Spaniard's silken skills for the Beast's combative qualities, especially since much of Roma's strength is derived from their midfield generals Simone Perrotta and Daniele De Rossi, the latter being, in my opinion, one of the most underrated players in European football.

On the other hand, Spanish La Liga champions Real Madrid have been on a very good campaign this season. Real Madrid was the top of their group during the group stages of the UEFA Champion League, and are also currently at the top spot of the Spanish La Liga standings, ahead of 2nd placers Barcelona by as much as 7 points.

Real Madrid, coached by Bernd Schuster, will be relying on key players like Raul Gonzalez, Robinho, Guti, Wesley Sneijder, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Fabio Cannavaro. AS Roma will be hosting Real Madrid for the first leg of the knock-out stage of the UEFA Champions League on February 19 at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. Real Madrid will then be the home team against AS Roma during the 2nd leg at the Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid on March 5, 2008.

Depending on the severity on Pepe's injury, Real Madrid's defensive line will be adjusted accordingly. With the presence of the Portuguese monster, expect the Whites to line up with Heinze and Ramos as full-backs, leaving Cannavaro and Pepe as the central defensive tandem.

UEFA Champions League Finals Bring Opportunities not Only for the Teams

AC Milan was the only UEFA Champions League semi-finalist to win on their return to home action on the Serie A during the weekend as they scored 4 goals against AC Chievo Verona. Add this to the semi-finals victory against Olympique Lyonnais and you can say you have a team worth watching.

But this pass to the finals does not only present an opportunity for the team on the UEFA Champions League but to its star Andriy Shevchenko, he is granted the chance to break a goal scoring record.

He currently has a record of 9 goals in the current UEFA Champions League Campaign, this is closer than anybody has gotten to break Ruud Van Nistelrooij’s record of 12 so basically with the three matches left; he only needs a goal a game to tie the standing record.

Another target within Shevchenko’s lead is the overall record for goals scored in the UEFA club competition. He already equaled the mark set by SL Benefica’s legend Eusebio, and he stands just 6 goals short of the mark set by Gerd Muller.

The player that got closest to Shevchenko is Barcelona’s star Ronaldinho with 7 goals on this 2005-06 UEFA Champions League tournament.

UEFA Champions League Action - Week 5 - Group Stage Review

The latest games in the UEFA Champions League were played on Wednesday evening. It's a little difficult to know where to start but let's head over to Anfield shall we?

Yes, Liverpool did win the game, beating the French side Marseille 1 - 0. The victory secured Liverpool's passage through to the last 16 of the Champions League when the knock-out stages begin next February, but (and it's a big but), this was not a convincing victory nor display. Especially in the second half.

You would have expected Liverpool, the 5 times winners, to have come out and totally dominate the second half, power forward towards the Kop and kill the game off, as they have done so often in the past. On the contrary, it was Marseille, who at times looked excellent with their quick passing, who made life very difficult for Liverpool. As the second half wore on it was the home team who were put under increasing pressure and you could sense that there was a certain sign of relief ripple around Anfield when the final whistle blow.

It is fair to say Liverpool's victory was more to do with Marseille's lack of akiller instinct in front of goal and at the other end, some absolutely woeful defending. The Liverpool goal, scored by their captain Steven Gerrard who was returning from injury, is the perfect example of Marseille's terrible defending. It was so bad I hardly know where to start. In fact I'm not going to bother describing it. If you've seen it you'll know exactly what I'm talking aboyt. If you haven't watch for the Marseille defender who obviously can't decide whether it's worth following Gerrard into the penalty area or not. Unfortunately he decides he can't be bothered. Although I suspect his manager won't agree with the decision. It left Gerrard totally with a with a free header in front of goal.

In the Group's other game, it was a very empty and quiet Vicente Calderon stadium in Madrid, (due to UEFA punishment) that saw Atletico Madrid beat PSV Eindhoven 2 - 1. The victory booked Atletico's place in the last 16. They also remain on top of the group ahead of Liverpool because they have scored one extra goal. The final round of games in this group will decide who finishes one and two and therefore, should get the better draw come the knock-out stages.

On paper it would appear Liverpool have the easier fixture as the are away to Dutch side PSV whilst Atletico travel to Marseille. Marseille are always a far better team at home and after last night's performance it wouldn't be a surprise if Marseille won. By the same token, also on last night's display, it wouldn't be too much of a surprise it PSV beat Liverpool too! Althoug surely the English team couldn't really play that badly again.

In Group A Chelsea and Bordeaux fought out a tough encounter which ended in a 1 - 1 draw. It also saw the dismissal of Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard near the end for two yellow cards. The draw leaves the qualification places still up for grabbed but the Blues know that a win over lowly Cluj at Stamford Bridge in the next round in two weeks will secure their qualification. However, should Bordeaux beat Roma, a draw will be sufficient for their qualification.

Over in Group C, two times winners Barcelona defeated Sporting Lisbon easily by 5 - 2. However, the result was almost inconsequential as both teams had already qualified for the knock-out stages of the competition. The match was a personal milestone for the French striker Thierry Henry who become the first French player to play 100 times in the Champions League. It was a good night all round for Henry who also opened the scoring for Barcelona.

I've saved the best group for last, Group B! The last round of games in this group should produce some pure sporting drama. However, German side Werder Bremen probably won't care because, with only drawing against rank outsiders Anorthosis Famagusta, Bremen are already out and have no chance of progressing. Yes, they could end up level on points with Panathinaikos, however due to their head to head results, the German team are out.

Anorthosis Famagusta have certainly surprised a few people in this season's Champions League Group Stages and I for one, would not have given them a chance of still being in with a psooibility of claiming a place in the last 16 with the final round of matches still to play.

The biggest surprise of Round 5 though must surely be the result at the San Siro where Inter Milan, now managed by Jose Mourinho, lost to Panathinaikos. The result that leaves the group wide open and all to play for. Could Inter go out at the expense of the two unfancied sides? Well, I don't know but I can't wait to find out!

UEFA Champions League Draw - Arsenal vs AS Roma

So, the Champions League draw have been made, and I have to admit one of the most anticipated matches is Inter vs Man Utd. Italian champions vs English champions. I'm an Arsenal fan, so I'm rather happy about it. Man Utd think they are the best, well eat this! Let's see how you get past Inter.

But there is another fixture I'm very much looking forward to. Roma vs Arsenal. Why? Both are my favourite teams, and they are 2 very similar clubs. Mirror image in other words.

Firstly, both clubs are having some financial problem. Which is the reason why both clubs doesn't spend big. Look at the players Arsenal and Roma have signed in the past few seasons: While big stars like Cristian Chivu left, instead of getting a big money replacement Luciano Spalleti got Juan for a mere 6.3 million euros. When the legend of Arsenal, Thierry Henry left, many people was thinking whether his replacement could lived up to expectations. Arsene Wenger chose to fork out only 8 million to sign Eduardo Da Silva, and although he's injured at the moment, his future looks bright.

Secondly, both clubs have been praised for their brilliant attacking football. Arsenal was believed to have played the best football ever seen in England during their Invincibles' season (2003/04), and up till today they do just that. Roma have been praised by pundits for playing exciting, attacking football since Luciano Spalleti took over and deployed the 4-5-1 formation. Normally in football it's the beauty vs the beast, but I believe in this match, both clubs will be known as the beauties and will be fighting their asses off.

Lastly, both clubs have their own star talisman of the team. Francesco Totti have always been associated with AS Roma, and up till today the fans still worship him. Francesc Fabregas, although only 21 years of age, has been one of the most popular players in Arsenal at the moment, and seeing how similar both players' style of play are, it's certainly a battle of the golden boys. However years ago this could be even more intense, when Thierry Henry was still at Arsenal. I'm sure about 4 years ago everybody wanted to see the 2 best strikers at their peak facing each other on the football field. What a match it would be.

Do you agree with me that arsenal and Roma are actually very similar? Or do you feel there's actually another Series A club that is even more identical with Arsenal (eg. Juventus)?
